New this year: Call for Posters!

Deadline: Friday, March 30, 2012

This year has been named the Year of the Wisconsin Idea, celebrating the principle that the University should improve people's lives beyond the classroom. Faculty and instructors at UW–Madison are extending the university's reach beyond the boundaries of the traditional classroom to reach all learners.

Consider submitting a proposal for a poster session for the 2012 Teaching and Learning Symposium program. The purpose of the poster sessions will be to provide an informal forum for the exchange of ideas, research, and practice in teaching and learning. Poster presenters will have 60 minutes to present their work to attendees. Please note that you must be present during the poster session—it is an opportunity for interaction among Symposium participants.

Poster session topics might include but are not limited to:

  • Actions that new and experienced teachers can take to extend their reach to new learners and communities (e.g. The Wisconsin Idea)
  • Approaches to enhance learning through excellence, inclusiveness, and innovation
  • Strategies that apply research and the scholarship of teaching and learning to the learning experience
  • Methods to assess student learning and examples of using assessment data to improve teaching and learning Strategies used to align our classes with the Essential Learning Outcomes and High-Impact Practices
  • Steps we can take to implement technology-enhanced learning

The form to submit your poster will ask for the following information:

  • Name(s) of presenter(s) with title(s) and contact information
  • Poster title
  • Poster Abstract (150-200 words)—this text will be used in the Symposium program

Please plan to be present at your poster to interact with session attendees from 8:30–9:30 a.m. and 10–10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at Union South.

Criteria for poster session acceptance include:

  • Originality, significance, and relevance of connection to teaching and learning
  • Well-formulated ideas that demonstrate development, creativity, and innovation in learning
  • Contribution to teaching and learning research, theory, practice or policy
  • Opportunities to interact with the viewers delineated clearly in the proposal

Remember that a successful poster is one that grabs attention and invites participants to talk with you. Really successful poster presenters won't have time to talk to all the people who want more information, so please bring 20 or more single-sheet summaries that include your contact info and links to more information (consider using shortened URLs).

We'll be sharing more information about setup and equipment needs when we send out acceptance emails.
